[ something about the word gets a barely-there flicker of something that's not anger or disgust, but it's deeper. darker. he's practiced at catching those moments when there's people around though and it fades to a laugh at the question like it was never there in the first place. ]

Nah, not me. [ he shakes his head ] Not to say I wasn't a little shithead, I was, but near everyone in a public school is some kind of twat or other.

[ wait-- ] Private school.

[ he's had that conversation enough times by now. ]

[He notices, but chooses not to say anything. Jeff is curious about David's life because he wants to know him, not because he wants to pry painful secrets out of him.]

Private school. Your family had money?

[He's ready to bail on the line of questioning the second David looks actually uncomfortable. He's just curious, more than he's been about anyone else for a while.]

[ he laughs at that one, more genuine than before, nodding ]

Don't seem like it right?

[ he gets that a lot ]

Dunno. You seem like an educated guy.

[Jeff flicks the pad of his thumb over one of David's knuckles, thoughtful.]

What'd you do for fun? When you were a kid.

[ ha ha ha imagine having fun. david shrugs a shoulder. ]

Don't really remember.

[ anyway ]

You think I seem educated?

[It's a concerning deflection, but David's allowed that.]

I mean - yeah? You seem sharp, at least. Maybe just until you open your mouth? Haven't heard you talk enough to figure that out yet.

[hardlydead]

Just until I open my mouth. [ he's not mad, if anything the way his eyes crinkle give away that he finds it hilarious, but he still licks his lips and nods slowly like that's deeply hurtful. ] Can't disagree with you, but fucking hell.

You know I'm just fucking with you, right?

[Jeff grins down at his own lap, shaking it off with a laugh.]

No, man, you seem like a smart guy. That's all.

I know.

[ he nudges jeff lightly and then leans a bit against him. david definitely doesn't want to talk about how smart he is or isn't, that feels strange to him and he can't put his finger on why. ]

[ maybe just no more talking about him at all. that sounds good. ]

What about you, huh? What's a usual Friday night for Jeff back home?

[outerfringe]

[He's happy to accommodate the lean, going still and shifting to try to give David a comfortable place to recline.]

Uh. Drinking beer and watching TV with my dog. Maybe some like, Rocket League or something. Nothing worth writing home about.

Rocket League's a game, yeah?

Uh, yeah. Five-a-side football with cars, kind of?

[ he pulls a bit of a face, because he genuinely can't picture it, but video games are bonkers sometimes so why not car football. ]

[He'll be the most envied metalhead around.]

Dunno what to ask anyway. Could do my best old man impression-- "You play a lot of games, son?"

[ he grins aside at jeff, letting that joke have its moment before he goes on. ]

I wanna get to know you obviously, know about you, but I'm not good at that. Too used to people who love the sound of their own voice, I guess.

Yeah. I mean - I get it. I'm not really great about talking about myself, either. [He'd definitely asked some of the most generic 'getting to know you' icebreakers ever, too.] Both kind of hopeless, I guess.

You're already doing better than most of my exes though.

[ for starters david actually likes him, which helps a lot. ]

Yeah? Am I allowed to ask about them?

[It's all curiosity, simple and sincere. Relationships could provide a lot of insights.]

[ david goes quiet as he thinks about that. he never went out of his way to be mean or cruel, just always ended up bored and kind of callous. ]

[ he shrugs ]

Guess I just never cared about them enough.

[outerfringe]

Really selling yourself, huh.

[He squeezes his arm, tries to make it easy to know he's just joking.]

But sounds rough for both of you, I guess.

[hardlydead]

I'm a real catch.

[ he doesn't really see how it was rough for him, but he doesn't wanna dig into it any more than this. he just shrugs a shoulder. ]

Are you interested in it? Dating, having a partner, whatever.

[David has seemed pretty into whatever was going on here, sure, but Jeff can't help his own curiosity.]

[ that question hits unexpectedly hard, he feels that panic from the other day rise in his chest and hears everything close in around him. can't help but think of tristan talking about the future, about racing to that airport in some desperate, stupid attempt to be fucking honest for once and realising he was too goddamn late. thinks about waking up in the fog after finally making that first step and for a moment david thinks he's going to be sick ]

I, uh.

[ he shakes his head — is that sweat on his forehead? gross — and clears his throat. ]

Yeah. I think so.
