[ david sits up very suddenly and turns to look at jeff ]

Tell me about him.

[Jeff looks a little startled by the enthusiasm, then privately proud. He glances around, finds a stick, and begins a careful outline of an American Staffie in the dirt.]

He's the best. Had been at the shelter for ages - but he's a lovebug.

[hardlydead]

[ he shifts closer to jeff so he can look at the shape in the dirt, smiling a little as he watches jeff draw. ]

He was lucky to have you.

[outerfringe]

Nah, man. [It's dismissive, sure, but friendly about it. There's a sad sort of fondness on his face as he drags the stick through the dirt.] I'm the one who lucked out. Couldn't imagine a better friend to have. Hope my neighbor found a good home for him.

[hardlydead]

Y'know, two things can be true.

[ he says it with a light nudge now he's close enough for that. ]

He'll be okay until you can see him again.

[If you'd asked Jeff if he thought there was any chance he'd be getting drunk and comforted about his dog by David King...

He nudges him back.]

Nah.

[ he'd love to have a dog but. ]

Considering I spent most of my time drunk or travelling, wouldn't be good for any animals.

I mean- not everyone's a homebody. But a good dog's worth drinking a little less.

[And then Jeff starts laughing, a quiet but lingering one, just because the empty bottle is still there with them.]

[ he raises an eyebrow at jeff, half-smiling but it's confused by him laughing more than anything. ]

Just a hell of a thing to say when you're drunk.

[He seems to be trying to give the cartoon dog a little jacket, but it's an extremely difficult thing to do in the dirt.]

Maybe if we had a good dog we wouldn't be. [ he smiles, looking again at the little dirt drawing ] Closest we've got is, uh...

[ hm ]

[ you know 'cause he's always just turning up with random shit he dug up ]

[Jeff chuckles, the stick going still in the dirt.]

I'm telling him you said that.

[No he's not. Ace wouldn't care, anyway.]

[ he huffs a small laugh ]

Like he'd give a shit. I've definitely called him worse.

Afraid to hear what you've called me.

[He's not. He's contently drunk, has started digging out some other sketch in the soil, arm occasionally brushing David's as he does.]

[ he tilts his head as he tries to think if he's called jeff anything before, eyes narrowed for a moment or two and then he shakes his head ]

Probably just 'big quiet bastard' or 'big loud bastard' depending.

[Jeff winces with a quiet grin, touching the hand not holding the stick to his own chest.]

Fuck, man. Cuts deep.

[ he shoves jeff's shoulder with a grin ]

Shut the fuck up.

[Jeff swats in his direction with the stick.]

Just saying. Quiet AND loud. Can't win for losing.

[TBF he is the loudest quiet guy ever.]

[ david laughs — honestly he's drunk enough it almost comes out as a giggle but if jeff says a thing about it he's getting thrown in the fire — and gives jeff's shoulder a squeeze ]

There's just two sides to you or whatever.

[Jeff isn't saying a thing, but he does lean into the squeeze like he's just a little surprised by it.]

Get a dog when you get out of here, man. That can be your change.

[ david's hand lingers a little, but even drunk he's aware that it's a bit long for just a manly shoulder pat and the way he pulls his hand away is maybe a little abrupt ]

Two's a lot considering some of the wankers around here.

[ to say nothing about potential dogs ]

[This is weird. Is it weird? Fuck, he doesn't know, man. He knows that he's made more than his fair share of mistakes when alcohol has been involved, and he's not keen on repeating most of those.

Still, even with that said: he's kind of sad about David pulling his arm away.]

[Is the cartoonish little face he's making in the dirt now meant to be David? Maybe.]

[ moving swiftly on. he clears his throat and gestures to the little face jeff's drawing ]

Yeah. [An answer to the question, but he's revisiting that first statement as he puts a little hoodie on the cartoon David.]

I stand out? Because I'm so quiet, or because I'm so loud?

[ he tilts his head, watching jeff add to the dirt drawing ]

I know plenty of the others are, y'know, good too but you're not... [ he trails off a bit, looking for the words, frowning in concentration ] You're not annoying about it.
